What the announcement claims

On September 10, Alexandr Lenk of Instacart will present research on “AI pioneers” within engineering teams at the Bay Area Tech Economics Seminar. According to the abstract, the arrival of one unusually active user is associated with an increase in the number of experiments and successful full launches. [1 · Stanford Data Science]

The claimed effect is stronger when the pioneer holds a more senior position and is especially evident among junior colleagues. The seminar will take place at the University of San Francisco; attendance is open upon registration. [1 · Stanford Data Science]

What cannot yet be claimed

What has been published so far is the abstract of a forthcoming talk, rather than a peer-reviewed paper with a complete methodology. The sample size, method of identifying a causal effect and robustness of the findings cannot be independently assessed, so the claimed relationship cannot be transferred to other companies without qualifications. Expert commentary

Even with this limitation, the work proposes a useful unit of measurement: adoption’s value is determined by changes in output and the share of experiments reaching an actual launch, rather than by the number of licenses purchased or logins. An active colleague can reduce perceived risk, demonstrate use cases and provide social proof. [1 · Stanford Data Science]

After the presentation, the full paper, sample and effect size should be examined. If the result holds up, organizations will benefit more from identifying and supporting internal champions who spread the practice than from simply granting access to a new tool. [1 · Stanford Data Science]
