Spectrum’s second flight
Spectrum launched on September 5 from Andøya Spaceport in Norway, crossed the Kármán line, separated its stages, performed an orbital maneuver and deployed its payload. Isar Aerospace called the mission the first commercial orbital flight of a rocket developed and built in Europe by a private company. [1 · Isar Aerospace] [2 · Reuters]
The company said rockets three through seven were already in production and that its new 40,000 m² factory was designed for eventual output of up to 40 rockets a year. At the time of the announcement, Isar was still confirming the condition of the deployed spacecraft with its customers. [1 · Isar Aerospace]
From the first attempt to orbit
Spectrum’s first test flight on March 30, 2025 lasted approximately 30 seconds and ended with the loss of the rocket. The company emphasized that the test had provided data and verified launch-pad operations, while the next vehicle was intended to resolve critical unknowns. [3 · Isar Aerospace]
The second flight completed the key stages: stage separation, second-stage ignition, reaching orbital velocity and spacecraft deployment. This changes the company’s position: the flight has demonstrated technical capability, although reliability cannot yet be assessed from a single successful mission. [1 · Isar Aerospace] [2 · Reuters]
The economics and significance for Europe
Neither a public launch price nor actual production and operating costs are available, so margins cannot be assessed. Only operational indicators are verifiable: reaching orbit, payload deployment, several rockets in production and the factory’s stated future capacity. [1 · Isar Aerospace]
For European satellite companies, Isar’s success creates a local commercial route to orbit that is less dependent on the SpaceX queue and government programs. But competitiveness will be determined by the frequency of successful launches, insurance rates and the price per kilogram of payload, rather than the rocket’s origin or the factory’s floor area. Expert commentary
The next indicators are the date of the third launch, the interval between missions, confirmation of satellite condition, actual order bookings and the ability of production to sustain the stated pace. After the technical victory, repeatability will be the main proof of the business. [1 · Isar Aerospace] [2 · Reuters]
