One announcement, two availability levels

On 29 September 2026, the group that owns BigCommerce and Feedonomics announced two product-data enrichment tools. They turn existing information into titles, descriptions, feature bullets, questions and answers and search metadata. The vendor’s aim is to prepare catalogues for storefronts, marketplaces, advertising, search and conversational interfaces. [1 · Commerce · press release · 29 September 2026]

Availability differs. The official product page marks Feedonomics Enrichment as Now Available and BigCommerce Catalog Enrichment, embedded in the store control panel, as Early Access. It is therefore accurate to describe the first as launched and the second as early access, rather than two equally broad releases. [2 · BigCommerce · agentic commerce page]

What the systems write—and what they do not

BigCommerce Catalog Enrichment generates seven text fields: product name, description, SEO meta description, page title, an AI snippet and two question-and-answer formats. One run is limited to 250 products, currently works only with English content, does not create advertising-channel fields, and applying its output cannot be undone in one action. Feedonomics Enrichment is designed for storefront and external-channel copy. Its documentation draws a firm boundary: the product does not fill structured attributes such as colour, material or size, assign taxonomy categories, invent missing facts or overwrite source fields. Generated copy lands in separate fields and should be reviewed before export. [4 · Feedonomics Docs · FDX Enrichment scope]

Where the return may come from

The main saving is less likely to come from “replacing a writer” than from reducing repetitive preparation of versions of one product for multiple channels. Review remains a real cost: a compatibility or use-case error may cost more than the hours saved. BigCommerce also carries the operational risk of irreversible application, so a pilot should start with a catalogue copy or a small category. Measurement should compare enriched and control groups under the same prices, availability and advertising. Useful indicators include card-preparation time, rejected-field share, channel-moderation errors, impressions, visits, conversion and returns. Without that design, a traffic increase can be wrongly credited to copy when seasonality, bids or assortment changed. Expert commentary

The point of the announcement is an attempt to move generative AI from a separate editor into the product-data flow. When output is created where the catalogue is already stored or distributed, teams need not shuttle copy through spreadsheets and external services. That can accelerate large catalogues, but only if review rules sit in the same workflow. The distinction between the products matters economically. Feedonomics sits closer to multichannel distribution and can prepare copy for external destinations; BigCommerce improves the store’s own product card. A business should choose according to where the data deficit arises—in the source catalogue, on the storefront or during channel adaptation—not by the promise of being “AI ready”. Limiting the tools to copy rather than structured attributes is sensible. A weak advertising description is undesirable, but a wrong size, material or compatibility value can break filters, cause the wrong purchase and increase returns. Refusing to invent missing facts keeps responsibility with the source-data system and lowers the risk of plausible fabrication. The vendor’s quality score is not independent validation. It may detect inconsistency or deviation from tone, but it does not prove that a specification is correct, that a card ranks better or that it sells more. Copy quality must also be separated from source-data completeness: without a required attribute, even polished text does not make a card fit for a buying decision. Merchants still need sample reviews by product specialists and experiments in which content is the variable that changes. For shoppers, richer cards can make comparison easier and conversational search more useful. The counter-risk is mass production of smooth but interchangeable copy that conceals real product differences. Society benefits not from more generated words, but from clearer attributes, traceable data origins and a route to correct errors. Over the next three to six months, maturity will be shown by BigCommerce leaving early access, languages beyond English, the share of generated content humans accept and measurable control-group results. If labour falls without more returns and corrections, the tools can become operational infrastructure. For now, this is a promising working layer with clearly bounded evidence.
