The free product is not available to every Clubcard member

On 21 October, Tesco began Clubcard Freebies. Under the official terms, a selected member receives one coupon for a free 223g Cadbury Family Treatsize Chocolate Bars Multipack. The campaign ends at 23:59 on 3 November; availability applies, there is no cash alternative, and Tesco may substitute a product of equal or greater value. Eligibility is limited to Clubcard members aged 18 or over with a valid account who signed into the Tesco app at least once during the previous 12 months. Tesco allocates coupons at its discretion and explicitly says not every member will receive one. Public terms do not describe the selection model or confirm the media claim that past purchase history determined recipients. The coupon must be added to Clubcard in the app. It can be redeemed in-store, in an online grocery order or through rapid delivery. The product requires no purchase, but digital channels may involve delivery, collection and minimum-basket charges. The Sun reports one million recipients and a £4.50 value; these are media figures rather than numbers from the official terms. A free coupon can be both a gift and a behavioral test

The mechanism performs several jobs: it brings the user back into the app, links a digital offer with a physical visit or order and makes redemption observable through Clubcard. Yet redemption alone is not incremental sales: the recipient might have visited Tesco anyway, while the free item may replace a paid chocolate purchase. Evaluation needs at least four stages: coupon exposure, addition to the card, redemption and other items added to the basket. The economic result is incremental gross profit from the whole basket and later purchases, net of product cost, supplier funding, digital communication and fulfillment. None of these inputs has been disclosed. Research on samples and coupons identifies competing mechanisms: faster future purchase, demand expansion, cannibalized paid trial and heterogeneous responses by segment. Tesco therefore needs a comparable control among active app users and observation after 3 November; comparing recipients with non-recipients without random assignment may be biased by the selection algorithm itself. Expert commentary

The commercially interesting element is not the chocolate but turning the app into a place where members expect a personal surprise. That expectation may increase Clubcard checking and give Tesco an owned channel without discounting the whole range continuously. A scarce gift supports the relationship only if eligibility does not feel arbitrary or unfair. The official filter—app use during the past 12 months—separates digitally active members from everyone else. It simplifies execution but excludes people whom the programme might bring back into the digital channel. If Tesco wants to measure reactivation, it needs a separate test among lapsed users rather than only rewarding those already using the app. [1 · Tesco · official Clubcard Freebies terms, 21 October–3 November 2026] [8 · Marketing Science · coupon effects across the visit-to-purchase funnel]

A randomized study across 267 Japanese supermarkets linked coupon redemption plus a subsequent reward with lower churn and higher customer lifetime value. It examined a different action sequence, market and category. For Clubcard Freebies the finding merely establishes a hypothesis: redemption may affect the relationship, but Tesco needs its own experiment. A free product may create brand trial, accelerate a purchase or replace a purchase the customer would have paid for. Field research on samples detects all three mechanisms. Cadbury therefore needs new buyers and later paid purchase, while Tesco needs incremental basket profit; a large coupon issue count does not establish success for either party. Omnichannel redemption lowers barriers, but conditions differ: the item can be collected in-store without a purchase, while online channels impose possible fees and basket minimums. That can mechanically lift digital basket value while disappointing someone expecting a fully free experience. Checkout abandonment, support contacts, out-of-stocks and substitutions should be measured separately. After 3 November, Tesco should report more than redemption volume: activation and use rates, incremental gross profit, new-to-brand share, paid Cadbury repurchase after 30–90 days, visit frequency, churn and complaints. If a randomized holdout shows improvements without weaker trust, Clubcard Freebies can become a durable CRM mechanism rather than a one-off giveaway.
