Orders lifted revenue and the quarter ended in profit
On November 4, 2026, Wayfair reported results for the quarter ended September 30. Net revenue reached $3.420 billion, up 9.7% from $3.117 billion a year earlier. Gross profit increased from $934 million to $1.012 billion, although gross margin slipped from 30.0% to 29.6%. [1 · Wayfair · third-quarter 2026 results, November 4, 2026]
U.S. revenue increased by $312 million, or 11.4%, to $3.040 billion. International revenue fell by $9 million, or 2.3%, to $380 million; the decline was 1.8% on a constant-currency basis. The U.S. market therefore accounted for all of the company’s net revenue increase. [1 · Wayfair · third-quarter 2026 results, November 4, 2026]
GAAP operating income rose from $38 million to $106 million, while the bottom line moved from a $99 million loss to $62 million in net income. Operating cash flow was $198 million, compared with $155 million, and free cash flow (FCF) was $136 million, up from $93 million. [1 · Wayfair · third-quarter 2026 results, November 4, 2026]
Volume, not the average ticket, drove growth
Delivered orders increased 12.2% to 11.0 million, while average order value fell from $317 to $311. The active customer base grew 4.7% to 22.2 million. Wayfair defines an active customer as someone who made at least one direct purchase from its sites during the preceding 12 months. [1 · Wayfair · third-quarter 2026 results, November 4, 2026]
Repeat customers placed 80.0% of delivered orders, compared with 80.1% a year earlier. Their orders increased 11.4% to 8.8 million, while trailing-12-month orders per active customer rose from 1.87 to 1.90. The figures tie growth mainly to a broader customer base and slightly higher purchase frequency rather than a higher average ticket. [1 · Wayfair · third-quarter 2026 results, November 4, 2026]
U.S. segment adjusted EBITDA increased from $209 million to $261 million, but the international segment posted a $25 million loss on that measure, compared with a $1 million loss a year earlier. Total adjusted EBITDA consequently rose only from $208 million to $236 million. The measure excludes several costs, including equity-based compensation, interest and depreciation. Expert commentary
The established figures point to operating leverage: revenue increased by $303 million and gross profit by $78 million, while operating expenses rose by only $10 million. Operating income therefore increased by $68 million. The slight decline in gross margin shows that most of the improvement came from controlling expenses below gross profit, not from earning more on each dollar of sales. The customer metrics make the growth mechanism clear. Orders rose 12.2% and active customers increased 4.7%, while average order value declined by nearly 2%. That combination usually means the retailer is expanding transaction count and purchase frequency without help from a larger basket. Suppliers may see a higher flow of orders, although this does not guarantee more revenue per item. [1 · Wayfair · third-quarter 2026 results, November 4, 2026]
A repeat-customer share near 80% limits the idea that a one-off advertising push alone explains the growth. It does not prove stronger loyalty, however: the share barely changed, and the release does not disclose customer acquisition cost or cohort profitability. An alternative explanation is more frequent purchasing by existing customers combined with new-customer inflows, promotions and a different product mix. Geography remains the quarter’s main constraint. The U.S. segment produced all of the revenue increase and lifted adjusted EBITDA, while international revenue declined and the segment’s adjusted EBITDA loss widened to $25 million. If that gap persists, the international business will absorb part of U.S. profit; if orders and margin recover outside the U.S., the group would gain a second source of growth. The non-GAAP measures need separate interpretation. Adjusted EBITDA of $236 million excludes, among other items, $66 million of equity-based compensation and related taxes. Free cash flow of $136 million is calculated after $30 million of property and equipment purchases and $32 million of site and software development costs. These measures help compare trends, but GAAP operating and net income reflect a broader set of expenses. [1 · Wayfair · third-quarter 2026 results, November 4, 2026]
A conditional positive scenario for the next few quarters requires order growth to continue, repeat-customer share to remain stable and gross margin to avoid further erosion. The observable tests are active customers, orders per customer, average order value, gross and operating margin, international revenue and segment EBITDA. Slower order growth or a wider international loss would weaken the case for a durable improvement in business economics. [1 · Wayfair · third-quarter 2026 results, November 4, 2026]
