Three days of offers and a two-hour app window
RetailMeNot announced National Cash Back Day on 5 November. The event runs through 7 November across more than 3,500 retailers, with a stated maximum rate of 30%. A member signs in on the site or app, activates an offer and completes a qualifying purchase on the retailer’s site; eligibility depends on the offer terms and return rules. On the first day, RetailMeNot ran Appy Hour from 3pm to 5pm US Central Time. The app displayed higher rates and exclusive offers, and users were invited to enable push notifications for each short drop. The design combines a time limit, a mobile channel and a handoff to an external retailer’s checkout. The event also adds a holiday-travel award: ten participants are promised $1,500 each. RetailMeNot links it to higher travel costs, but an award is a promotion rather than a measure of satisfaction or retention. It published no participant count, win probability per activation or effect on purchasing. [1 · RetailMeNot · National Cash Back Day announcement, 5 November 2026]
Cashback paid does not reveal incremental sales
RetailMeNot says it has returned more than $110m to members since the event began in 2019. In January, it also attributed $1.7bn in retailer sales to its cashback offers. Both are cumulative figures: neither shows how many orders the service caused, how many would have happened anyway, or profit after rewards, commissions and returns. The company survey was fielded in September 2026 with 1,183 respondents. The release says 63% start holiday shopping in October or earlier, 58% see Black Friday as a month and 63% regularly stack coupon codes, cashback and rewards. Recruitment, weighting and question wording are undisclosed; self-reports are not observed behaviour or a Cash Back Day result. An earlier App Week launch came with a claim that partner orders had risen 27% after the new app arrived. Without a period, denominator, comparable group or split between new and existing users, the figure remains correlational. RetailMeNot has not yet reported even a preliminary movement for the current event. Expert commentary
The established fact is that RetailMeNot has gathered offers from many retailers into one event and created two levels of urgency: a three-day campaign and two hours of higher app rates. The design can take someone into the service, onward to a retailer and back to the app for another offer. No public data yet show how many people completed that journey. Cashback differs from an immediate discount because the reward arrives later. Panel data from a large cashback service linked receipt of a payout with a higher probability and size of the next purchase through the same service. The mechanism helps explain RetailMeNot’s interest in payout and return visits, but estimates from another sample cannot be transferred to Cash Back Day. The two-hour Appy Hour and push notifications rely on momentary context. Two field experiments on mobile promotions found that current digital-channel activity predicted response more strongly than customer history. A causal RetailMeNot estimate would need a randomly held-out group without the alert or with a standard rate; otherwise urgency is mixed with users’ existing readiness to buy. A larger reward can attract deal seekers without creating durable customers. A natural experiment with 184,978 app users found a U-shaped relationship between reward size and later engagement, alongside a short-lived “house money” response. A separate credit-card study linked 1% cashback with 32% higher spending and 8% higher debt; that is a different product, but it flags overconsumption risk. An attributed order follows a RetailMeNot click, while an incremental sale requires a counterfactual. A practical test would randomise rates or notification timing. The calculation should include order gross margin, cashback payment, commission, returns, cannibalisation of ordinary traffic and purchases made after the subsidy ends. Useful post-event measures are activation-to-purchase conversion, customers new to the service and retailer, incremental gross profit, reward use, 30- and 90-day repeat purchase, retention without an elevated rate, returns, complaints and suspicious activity. Consumer value means genuine savings without added debt; retailer value means profitable orders that would not otherwise exist.
