One path from shelf to eSIM
On 28 September, Lidl Ireland announced that Lidl Connect would launch on 5 October. Under the published offer, one plan for the first 100,000 customers will cost €8.99 per month with that price retained; up to three more lines can be added to the same account at €12.99 per month. The report describes a monthly plan with no long-term commitment, unlimited 5G data, calls and texts to Irish and UK networks, 50 GB of EU and UK roaming, and 100 international minutes. The funnel joins digital and physical channels. A customer can choose an eSIM and connect from home or buy a physical SIM for €0.99 in a Lidl Ireland store. In either case, purchase, activation and ongoing management are concentrated in Lidl Plus. The official Lidl Plus terms confirm the service structure: mobile connectivity under the Lidl Connect brand is supplied by TP IRELAND OPERATIONS LIMITED[4], identified as 1GLOBAL; activation requires an active Lidl Plus account and a payment method in Lidl Pay. Customers can port a number, view plans and bills, add lines and cancel the service inside the app. [2 · Lidl Ireland · official Lidl Plus terms, version 2.4, July 2026]
A loyalty programme becomes a service account
Before mobile service, Lidl Plus already combined personalised coupons, discounts, digital receipts and an in-store loyalty card scan. Lidl Connect adds a recurring paid service to the same account, turning the app from a discount tool into a persistent contact point for payment, support and monthly renewal. In April, 1GLOBAL described the partnership as a way to strengthen digital customer acquisition and engagement among existing Lidl customers. The supplier said plans would be embedded in Lidl Plus and that Lidl would gain more control as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). That is a supplier claim about intent, not a demonstrated result of the Irish launch. [4 · 1GLOBAL · official Lidl partnership announcement, 13 April 2026]
The link also creates dependency: the official terms warn that, after a Lidl Plus deletion request, there is a 72-hour recovery window and then the mobile service is terminated automatically. For relationship marketing, that is a strong account-retention mechanism, but it also raises the cost of failure or a difficult exit for the customer. What should be measured after launch
The reviewed materials disclose no actual conversion from Lidl Plus users into connections, customer acquisition cost (CAC), eSIM share, subscriber margin, churn, support load or incremental grocery purchases. The first 100,000 places are an offer cap, not a demand forecast; price and allowance do not prove profitability or loyalty. The official privacy notice says Lidl Plus may process plan status and price, data, minutes and texts used, number-porting, SIM, invoice, payment and refund information. Some information is used to infer interests and display personalised advertising. The evaluation should therefore cover not only connections and revenue but also failures, complaints, consent, account deletion and customer trust. Expert commentary
Strategically, Lidl Connect is interesting less for the tariff itself than for moving a loyalty programme into daily infrastructure. Groceries are bought intermittently; mobile connectivity is used continuously. If the service works without friction, Lidl Plus gains more reasons to be opened regularly and the retailer can maintain contact between shopping trips. Yet April’s promise to “strengthen engagement” remains a supplier promise until Irish outcome data appear. The omnichannel design is coherent: a physical SIM uses store reach and trust, eSIM shortens the route to activation, and the app keeps payment and service in one interface. The core test is not SIM distribution but the share of lines that activate successfully and time to first value. The funnel should run from offer view to sign-up start, payment validation, number port or allocation, activation, and 30- and 90-day retention. Low price alone says nothing about economics. Contribution should be measured by cohort: mobile gross margin plus incremental grocery profit, minus plan subsidy, support, partner payments and cannibalised discounts. Causal measurement needs a comparable Lidl Plus control group that has not yet seen the offer, or a phased rollout. Without one, higher grocery spend may simply reflect the greater prior activity of early adopters. Service coupling creates another risk. The terms require an active Lidl Plus account and connect account deletion to termination of mobile service. This may reduce app churn for the company while increasing exit costs for customers. A relationship is strengthened not by the barrier itself but by reliable number porting, transparent prices, responsive support and predictable cancellation. Data use requires a separate discipline of trust. The official notice lists plan, usage, number-porting, payment and refund data and allows some of it to support personalised advertising. An experiment with a representative sample of 1,131 Dutch residents found that personalisation slightly reduced trust and perceived benefits, with effects varying by context. This was not a Lidl study, but it challenges the assumption that more personalisation is always better. Editorial conditional forecast: after 90 days, a strong scenario would show completed activations, line retention, few support contacts and higher incremental profit without weaker trust measures. A weak scenario would be many low-cost registrations followed by first-payment churn, porting failures and no measurable effect on grocery loyalty. For now, the honest conclusion is that the omnichannel design is confirmed; its commercial and relationship effectiveness is not.
