Four thresholds connect the app, stores and online orders
On 1 October, Asda launched Rewards Plus in Scotland as a new feature in the Asda Rewards app. Shoppers scan their digital card, while eligible spend accumulates over the calendar month across several purchases or a single transaction in stores, at Asda Express and on Asda.com. In October, £25 of spend adds £1 to the Cashpot; £75 unlocks a voucher for 5p off every litre on one fuel fill; £150 unlocks a mission to spend £15 on George clothing or home products and earn £5; after £300, shoppers receive 10% back in their Cashpot on the next shop, capped at £10. The official maximum of £16 in Cashpot value is the sum of £1, £5 and the £10 cap. The fuel saving sits outside that total and varies with litres purchased. The launch is described as a Scottish pilot, so a national rollout has not been promised. The threshold is visible; the underlying economics are not
The ladder makes the next step visible and may accelerate purchases as a shopper approaches a reward. Research covering a café program and online tasks found more frequent action nearer the goal, while a pre-stamped-card experiment produced faster completion. That is a plausible mechanism, but it cannot be transferred to Asda grocery baskets without measurement. A threshold design can move spend from rivals, bring a purchase forward or merely subsidise spending that would have happened anyway. The last case creates attributed revenue but not incremental sales. Causal evaluation requires a pre-defined comparable control under the same pricing, assortment and communication rules. Asda published no invited or active participant count, tier-completion rate, basket value, reward cost, incremental units or gross profit. There is also no evidence on repeat purchase after month-end, retention, churn, customer lifetime value (CLV/LTV) or complaints. The pilot cannot be called successful from the launch alone. Omnichannel loyalty depends on the earning rules
Asda Rewards terms clarify that online rewards are credited after delivery or collection. A substitution can increase progress, rejecting it can reduce progress, and amending an order in a new calendar month moves the earning into that new period. This matters more than the headline promise: visible progress must reconcile with the fulfilled basket. [3 · Asda · current Asda Rewards terms and conditions]
Cashpot value is not cash: Asda Pounds must first be converted into a voucher, after which redemption thresholds and expiry rules apply. Returns can reduce earnings, and George.com is excluded from the online voucher mechanism. These restrictions may shape reward usage and satisfaction more than the headline value. A credible report needs the pilot period, inclusion rules, test and control sizes, attainment at every tier, fuel-voucher and Cashpot redemption, changes in frequency and basket, incremental sales and profit after reward cost. Cancellations, returns, support contacts and repeat purchase after 30–90 days should be reported separately. Expert commentary
Rewards Plus is notable not for another coupon but for turning a monthly budget into a visible sequence of goals. The design can make loyalty easier to understand: shoppers see the next threshold, while Asda can test movement between tiers across stores and ecommerce rather than only coupon response. The strongest behavioural mechanism is the goal gradient: effort can intensify as a reward gets closer. Primary research found purchase and task acceleration near a goal, while a separate study showed greater persistence when people were given an artificial sense of progress. Rewards Plus does not provide an initial endowment and mixes reward types, so those studies explain a hypothesis rather than predict its effect size. Competitively, the pilot may capture more of a household’s wallet without applying a universal discount to every item. Fuel, grocery and George rewards create a cross-category system in which one threshold points toward the next. If the increase is merely timing shift, Asda pays for existing behaviour; if baskets genuinely move from rivals, the design can increase wallet share. Customer risk concentrates near a threshold. Someone just short of £300 may add an unneeded item to unlock a future 10%, even though the maximum reward is £10. With household budgets under pressure, transparent benefit calculations and the absence of manufactured urgency matter more than an engaging progress bar. The relationship can deteriorate when an app shows near-completion but a substitution, return or fulfilment date moves the progress. The terms allow such adjustments, making notification and support quality part of the loyalty product. Observable trust signals are not NPS alone but reward redemption, repeat purchases, contacts, cancellations and app abandonment. [3 · Asda · current Asda Rewards terms and conditions]
A UK-wide rollout would become credible only after several monthly cycles and a comparable control. A good outcome is incremental gross profit after rewards alongside higher retention without worse complaints or returns. For now, Asda has launched a measurable hypothesis, not evidence that the ladder creates new purchases instead of paying for loyalty that already existed.
