The subscription joins loyalty with order fulfilment
Albertsons announced for U+ on Thursday, 22 October, and trade publications detailed the offer on 23–24 October. The annual fee is $39. Members are promised same-day delivery with no separate fee on orders over $30, pickup and the benefits of the free for U programme. Expedited delivery, advertised from 30 minutes, costs members another $2 per order. Expedited pickup carries no extra charge. These options are not universal: hours vary by store, eligible products are limited and the basket may be capped at 35 items depending on location. Another benefit is points that do not expire. For standard for U members, unused points expire within two calendar months, including the month in which they were earned. Albertsons did not disclose paid-member targets, acquisition plans, launch costs or expected renewal rates. A low entry price does not reveal the economics
The $39 price lowers the barrier compared with the company’s previous $99 annual subscription. The announcement does not explain how existing subscribers will migrate or whether earlier perks, including a monthly credit and discounts on selected private-label products, will remain. A direct package comparison is therefore incomplete. Albertsons says the most active members of its free programme save more than $25 a week on average. Its footnote defines them as households that used digital offers in at least six of the previous 12 weeks and spent an average of at least $50 weekly from 23 February 2025 to 21 February 2026. This is descriptive evidence from a selected active group: it does not show what they would have saved without the programme or how purchases will change after joining for U+. The launch should be judged by incremental behaviour against a comparable control group: new orders, purchase frequency, gross profit after picking and delivery, retention and renewal. A Journal of Marketing Research study found a persistent purchase increase from a paid subscription and separated economic benefits from the psychological effect of an upfront fee, but its findings cannot be transferred automatically to Albertsons. Expert commentary
Price is the main lever. At $39, the annual hurdle is far below the previous $99, so the programme may reach shoppers who liked regular delivery but could not justify the former fee. For Albertsons, it connects loyalty with fulfilment and may make the digital channel more habitual. An upfront fee can influence store choice even without a new discount on a particular item. Published research on paid programmes attributes part of the purchase increase to the feeling that the fee has already been incurred: members return more often to “use” the subscription. The authors used difference-in-differences and matched members with similar nonmembers, but studied a different programme; here, the mechanism remains a hypothesis. Customer value depends on order frequency, basket size and local availability. The $30 minimum and restrictions on expedited service mean the proposition will not be equally useful to everyone. Lower-cost delivery may help people with busy schedules or limited mobility, while geography and assortment constrain that benefit. For the retailer, a cheap subscription works only if order economics hold. More frequent orders can raise revenue, but they also add picking, last-mile, cancellation and support costs. An annual fee does not establish profitability: contribution after variable costs matters more than enrolments or online sales alone. Non-expiring points reduce the risk of losing earned value and may make the programme feel fairer. They also defer redemption liabilities and can hide weak reward use. Useful indicators include the share of members who redeem, time to first redemption and purchase changes after redemption. [2 · Albertsons · official for U rules]
Over the next two to four quarters, the key figures are new paid members, acquisition cost, order frequency, average basket, repeat purchase and renewal. Causal impact is best tested through a phased rollout or a holdout among comparable shoppers. Until those data appear, for U+ is a strong price proposition, not proven retention performance.
