Budgets do not guarantee deployment
Madrona surveyed 150 executives responsible for enterprise AI decisions. While 74% plan to expand budgets over the next 12 months, 83% of companies have moved fewer than half of their pilots into production. More than one-third have put fewer than a quarter into production. [1 · Madrona]
“The technology did not work as promised” ranked only sixth among reasons for failure. The main obstacles are integration complexity, security, privacy, compliance and tighter scrutiny of return on investment (ROI). [1 · Madrona]
Fast sales, limited protection
52% of deals close in under six months, but 77% of companies reassess AI vendors at least every six months, and 29% do so continuously. Contracted annual recurring revenue (ARR) therefore receives less protection from the contract itself and depends more on continually demonstrated value. [1 · Madrona]
Active use and user feedback rank among the top three scaling factors for 65% of buyers. Data security and privacy are among the top three purchase criteria for 78% of enterprises. [1 · Madrona]
The metrics that matter more
The amount of generated content says very little about the value of a production deployment. More useful measures are weekly active users in the target role, the share of successfully completed workflows, cost per accepted result, the number of human corrections and time to first value. [1 · Madrona] [2 · Madrona]
- Actual usage rather than the number of licenses issued. [1 · Madrona] [2 · Madrona]
- Accepted results rather than the number of model responses. [1 · Madrona] [2 · Madrona]
- Expansion and renewal risks assessed through user behavior. [1 · Madrona] [2 · Madrona]
- Full margin after retries, human handoffs and manual review. [1 · Madrona] [2 · Madrona]
Conclusion
Enterprise AI is becoming a market of fast sales and rapid reassessment. Industry-specific systems that execute tasks, tools for trust and governance, and products that demonstrate economic value within a specific workflow gain an advantage. [1 · Madrona] [2 · Madrona]
